Originally built by Arbel Fauvet Rail in France during the 1980s, these Sffgmss IFA wagons were designed for the fast and flexible transport of shipping containers across Europe. Known as ‘Ferryboat Wagons’, they were built to travel via ferry routes and through the Channel Tunnel, making them a common sight in both UK and European freight services. Their low deck height allows them to carry even high cube containers on British routes—making them especially versatile.

Each wagon can accommodate a single 45ft container or various combinations of 20ft and 30ft units, giving rail operators the flexibility to meet changing logistics demands. Often seen in the company of powerful Class 66 locomotives, these wagons have been operated by a range of freight companies including Touax, Ermewa, CNC, Novatrans, and France Wagons.
