History:
Known as ‘Black Fives’, these 4-6-0s were built by the LMS at its various works and also by private contractors, including this example, No. 5408, which was one of 327 completed by Armstrong Whitworth in the north-east. In total, 842 of these mixed traffic Class 5s were built between 1934 and 1951, No. 5408 entering service in September 1937 with a domed boiler, standard from 1936. It became part of BR stock at nationalisation in 1948 and received its new number, 45408, in May 1949. It was withdrawn in November 1966 after a service life of more than 29 years.
