History:
Just under a thousand of these 350hp were built in various forms between 1952 and 1962 across BR’s locomotive works at Crewe, Derby, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster and Horwich. This example was built at Doncaster and entered service from new at Stourton MPD, Leeds, in March 1958 as D3654.
Subsequently allocated to Leeds Holbeck from 1967, and then York North from 1988, it was inherited from BR by EWS at the turn of privatisation. As with many of the Class 08s and 09s that English Welsh & Scottish gained, 08499 received the recognisable maroon and gold corporate paint job, and enjoyed stints at depots in the south west like Lostwithiel, St. Blazey and Plymouth.
After a period in storage, it was reinstated and later painted into a plain blue livery and named 'Redlight'. It was last seen operating for Transport for Wales at Cardiff Canton.
