History:
This famous locomotive was first introduced in December 1875 by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway as No. 55 ‘Stepney’, one of 50 built at Brighton Works to the design of William Stroudley for use on south London commuter trains. It was renumbered to 655 in 1901, wearing Stroudley’s ‘Improved Engine Green’, as portrayed by the model.
It was rebuilt to an ‘A1X’ with slightly larger boiler in 1912 and served both the Southern Railway, as No. 2655, and BR as No. 32655 before becoming the Bluebell Railway’s first locomotive when bought from BR for £750 in May 1960.
