A Locomotive with Rich History
Originally built in December 1875 as L&BSCR No. 55 ‘Stepney’, this iconic locomotive underwent significant transformations throughout its life. Rebuilt to A1X specification in 1912, it was soon adapted for air-controlled motor train operation and renumbered 655, based at West Croydon.
In 1920, it saw temporary duty on the Woolmer Military Railway, and following withdrawal in 1923, it returned to service after an overhaul at Brighton Works. Reclassified as B655, it worked on the Lee-on-Solent branch using push-pull equipment. Later, under Southern Railway and BR, it became 2655, and finally 32655 in BR ownership—presented here in the condition as it appeared during its Hayling Island service prior to retirement in 1959.
A Preservation Pioneer
Perhaps most famously, 32655 became the first locomotive acquired by the Bluebell Railway in 1960, kicking off the UK’s preservation movement. It was restored to its original identity as Stepney and continues to charm enthusiasts to this day.
For those who appreciate rich railway heritage and impeccable model engineering, the Hornby TT:120 BR ‘Terrier’ 32655 offers both in abundance—blending late steam era aesthetics with modern performance in an iconic package.
