The ßBlack 5s were a mixed traffic locomotive a ßdo-anything go-anywhere type designed by Stanier and introduced in 1934. In their early days the locomotives were known as the ßBlack Staniers because of their black livery but were later nicknamed ßBlack 5s. Known for a truly staggering number of potential modifications the Black 5 was the workhorse of the LMS and later BR from 1934 -1951.
