Starting out in model railways? You're not alone. Every year, hundreds of customers approach us online, in-store or at the model shows we attend for advice on scales, control systems, wiring and track setups. And, with TT:120 being the latest scale to swoop through the market, offering scale to gauge accuracy at an attractive price point, many newcomers are adopting it from the outset.

With more scenery and track able to fit in a given space than 'OO', TT:120 is ideal, and provides greater options to model (slightly) more ambitious projects than 'OO'.

Hornby has issued a selection of train sets with its HM7000 app-based control system to get you off to a flying start, but these might not always align with future plans. And, the track provided (continunous loops) might not be to the track plan design you've imagined. So, where next?

The ideal locomotive for TT:120

Looking for a route into detailed, compact TT:120 project - perhaps an 'end-to-end' setup without a space-consuming loop? Hornby's Class 08 is your starting point. With many already sold-out with the manufacturer, our stocks are dwindling too as modellers discover their versatility in projects.

Pair with a growing number of wagons available from Hornby, or, if you're tempted by a weekend build, look to supplement with rolling stock from Peco. And, a few sidings and buildings later, you've a compact shunting layout that can be entertaining to both build, and operate.

Back story: BR's 'standard' shunter

The Class 08 is one of the most dependable shunters built. While all Class 08 shunters were built under British Railways, they are based on an earlier LMS design. With 996 of this Class built, these locomotives are still a common sight on mainline yards and sidings, and a common sight on heritage railways, too!

While not intended for mainline duties, some Class members would travel on the mainline between yards if required, or for maintenance between sheds.

Benefit from these highly-competitive prices while stocks last.
