The Napier 'roar' returns – Hornby's DP1 back in stock
Few locomotives can claim to have reshaped the future of long-distance commuter travel on British Rail quite like DP1 'Deltic'. And now, we’ve secured the final remaining ‘OO’ models from Hornby to its very impressive specification. Available DCC ready, we've also customised a number too for that perfect in-service look!

A bold step into the future
Built in 1955 by English Electric at Dick, Kerr & Co. in Preston, DP1 wasn’t just another diesel — it was a technology demonstrator designed to prove a concept of high-speed diesel-electric rail travel.
At its heart were two Napier Deltic engines, originally developed for Royal Navy fast patrol boats. These unique triangular, opposed-piston engines delivered an impressive 3,300 horsepower for their compact size, giving DP1 immense power for a relatively low weight. It was a locomotive that could haul high-speed express trains and rival the steam giants it was destined to replace, leading to production orders of the English Electric 'Deltic' Co-Co/Class 55s.

The prototype that inspired a class
The subsequent Class 55 'Deltics' dominated the East Coast Main Line for three decades. Before that, DP1 worked prestigious services including:
- London to Liverpool expresses
- The Merseyside Express
- And, trials on the demanding Settle–Carlisle route
Despite a relatively short operational life, its impact was enormous — proving diesel power could deliver both speed and reliability on Britain’s main lines.

A short life – a lasting legacy
DP1’s working career ended in 1961 following engine failure, but its story didn’t end there. Preserved as part of the National Collection, it remains a one-of-a-kind prototype, never replicated in working form and never run again — making it one of the most unique locomotives in British railway history.

Hornby's landmark release
Hornby’s Dublo-era DP1 model finally brings this historic prototype to life in stunning detail. It fills a gap that has existed since the original 1960 catalogue featured it, but never produced it.
Key features include:
- Heavy die-cast construction for exceptional presence
- Powerful coreless motor with dual flywheels
