Sir Nigel Gresley’s W1 ‘Hush Hush’ locomotive is one of the most fascinating “what ifs” in British steam history — a bold experiment in power, speed, and innovation.
Unveiled in 1929 as No. 10000, the W1 was Gresley’s radical answer to a growing demand for high-speed express services on the East Coast Main Line. Its high-pressure water-tube boiler, more commonly found in marine engineering made it truly extraordinary.
The project was top secret during development, earning the nickname "Hush Hush" among railwaymen. Its streamlined casing (added later in 1935) gave it a futuristic, almost alien appearance, setting the tone for Gresley's iconic designs like the A4s 4-6-2s.
Though the W1 never reached its full potential and proved too complex to maintain, it was a valuable testbed. It pushed the boundaries of steam design, influencing the engineering principles. Eventually rebuilt in 1936 with a conventional boiler and reclassified under BR as 60700, it remained a one-of-a-kind marvel — a symbol of British railway ambition.
W1 wasn’t just a locomotive — it was a statement.
