These exclusive 24.5T mineral wagons — now beautifully deluxe weathered by our team — are based on one of British Railways’ most iconic unfitted mineral freight types.

British Railways introduced the 24.5T mineral wagon in the early 1950s to handle bulk coal traffic, especially to power stations and heavy industry. Built between 1952 and 1962 to diagrams 1/115 and 1/118, more than 3,300 wagons were constructed at Ashford and Shildon wagon works to meet demand. They were often seen in block trains, carrying coal from collieries across Scotland, the Midlands and South Wales. As the freight network modernised, some were later adapted to carry other mineral traffic such as sand.

Under BR’s TOPS classification, these wagons appeared in mineral and heavy freight roles right into the late steam and early diesel era. They were distinguishable from smaller mineral wagons by taller side panels and yellow bodyside triangles used from the late 1950s to help staff differentiate them in yards and depots.

Now available in weathered form with optional scale coal or coke loads (select load and customise upon checkout) these models are ideal for modern and historical layouts alike.
