The prototype
The Hunslet Engine Company’s Bo-Bo diesel-electrics were designed in the late 1960s for heavy shunting and short-haul industrial freight duties. With their full-width cabs, rugged frames, and distinctive boxy profile, these locomotives were built for the rigours of steelworks, collieries, and other demanding industrial environments.
Typically powered by a Rolls-Royce diesel engine driving four traction motors, they offered excellent low-speed control and high tractive effort – ideal for moving heavy loads in confined yard spaces. Over the years, examples saw service at British Steel plants, coal loading facilities, and private industrial railways across the UK.
Some of these locomotives have found new homes with preservation groups and heritage railways, where their compact size and robust build continue to prove invaluable.
The KR Models miniaturisation
KR Models’ new OO gauge Hunslet Bo-Bo has been developed using original works drawings and extensive photographic research.
