The Las Vegas Grand Prix: From Casino Parking lots to the bright lights of the strip

Few races on the modern Formula 1 calendar capture the spectacle and glamour of motorsport quite like the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Set against the neon lights of the famous Strip, the race offers high-speed racing with the entertainment capital of the world — making it one of the most unique events in Formula 1.

Racing’s first visit to 'Sin City'

Although the current event feels modern, Formula 1 actually raced in Las Vegas more than four decades ago. The original races took place in 1981 and 1982 under the name Caesars Palace Grand Prix.

Rather than racing along the Strip, the circuit was constructed in the car park of Caesars Palace casino. Despite the novelty, the event struggled with low attendance and the intense desert heat.

The two races still produced memorable moments with Alan Jones winning the 1981 race for Williams and Michele Alboreto securing his first Formula 1 victory in 1982 driving for Tyrrell.

After the 1982 race the event disappeared from the Formula 1 calendar for more than 40 years.

The spectacular return of the Las Vegas GP

Formula 1 returned to the city in spectacular fashion in 2023, introducing the purpose-built Las Vegas Strip Circuit.

The track winds through the heart of the city and includes a long flat-out section down the iconic Las Vegas Boulevard, passing famous landmarks such as the Bellagio fountains and Caesars Palace.

Key circuit facts include:

  • Circuit length: 6.201 km (3.85 miles)
  • Number of turns: 17
  • Race distance: 50 laps
  • Top speeds: Over 340 km/h

The race takes place entirely at night, turning the strip into a glowing ribbon of speed as Formula 1 cars blast past casinos and neon lights.

The 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix

The 2025 edition of the race produced plenty of drama.

Max Verstappen claimed victory after a tense race around the Strip, while George Russell and Kimi Antonelli were promoted to the podium after post-race disqualifications for both McLaren drivers due to excessive skid plank wear.

The result added another memorable chapter to the modern Las Vegas Grand Prix and helped reinforce the race’s reputation for excitement and unpredictability.

A modern classic on the Formula 1 calendar

Since its return, the Las Vegas Grand Prix has quickly become one of the most talked-about events in Formula 1. Its combination of high-speed street racing, nighttime spectacle and the iconic Las Vegas skyline makes it unlike any other race on the calendar.

That unique atmosphere is also what makes the new Spark 1:5 scale Las Vegas GP helmets so appealing to collectors. Inspired by one of the most visually striking races in Formula 1, they capture the spirit of the event in miniature form.

With pre-orders now open, fans of Russell, Piastri, and Antonelli — as well as collectors of Formula 1 memorabilia — will want to keep an eye on these limited releases.
