The story behind the livery

The striking Wessex Trains formation became one of the defining photographic attractions of the early 2000s.

From May 2004, Wessex Trains hired Fragonset Railways to provide top-and-tail locomotive haulage for Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership services between Bristol and Weymouth, following a shortage of multiple units.

To launch the operation, Fragonset’s re-wired Class 31/6 locomotive 31601 and a rake of Mk. 2F coaches were repainted into the now-iconic pink and silver Wessex livery. The bold colour scheme immediately attracted huge attention from railway enthusiasts and photographers, quickly becoming a regular fixture across railway magazines, websites and lineside photography.

Today, the livery remains one of the most talked-about and memorable train liveries of the privatisation era.
