Built in 1941, Channel Packet was the first member of Oliver Bulleid’s Merchant Navy Class, a fleet of express passenger locomotives designed for the Southern Railway. Known for its futuristic air-smoothed casing and innovative chain-driven valve gear, the locomotive embodied wartime ingenuity and post-war ambition.

Named after one of the Southern Railway's cross-channel ferries, 21C1 Channel Packet served high-speed routes between London and the South Coast. It was rebuilt in 1959 to simplify maintenance, losing its original casing but retaining its distinctive character.

Withdrawn in 1966, it was preserved and is now part of the National Collection, representing a bold era in British railway engineering.

With high levels of detail and authentic features, Hornby’s latest model is a must-have for Southern Railway fans and collectors of British steam alike.
