The Manning Wardle 'L' class was a popular choice for civil engineering contractors and light railways, with two examples surviving into preservation. Originally conceived as a smaller 'M' class, the design evolved into a more powerful development of the 'K' class, retaining its wheelbase, barrel length and cylinder diameter but gaining a larger boiler and longer cylinder stroke.

 

The result was greater tractive effort while preserving the distinctive Manning Wardle appearance, complete with elegant proportions, double-bossed wheels and a range of customer-specified options.
