BACK-STORY
Built at Doncaster Works in August 1936 and introduced during the golden age of British steam, Silver King was one of four A4 4-6-2 'Pacifics' commissioned by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) to launch the prestigious ‘Silver Jubilee’ express service between London King’s Cross and Newcastle. These streamlined locomotives—Silver Link, Silver Fox, Quicksilver, and Silver King—were finished in a distinctive silver-grey livery with black wheels, evoking speed and futuristic flair.
After the war, with the LNER being absorbed into British Railways in 1948, Silver King underwent several changes. Renumbered 60016, it lost its silver livery in favour of BR’s standard green. Although no longer part of a high-profile express, the locomotive continued to serve on premier passenger duties along the East Coast Main Line, from London to Edinburgh and beyond.
Silver King earned its own loyal following. Its consistency, performance, and association with one of the UK’s most glamorous interwar trains kept it firmly in the hearts of fans, until it was withdrawn from service in December 1962.
Sadly, the locomotive wasn't preserved. However, its legacy lives on through this detailed model bundle that celebrates the elegance and innovation of the A4 class.
