Twenty-five years ago, what began as a single customer's request would grow into one of the defining services at TMC.

This week, TMC celebrates 25 years of professional model railway customisation, transforming ready-to-run models into unique, highly-detailed creations for railway enthusiasts across the UK and around the world.

From subtle weathering to complete bespoke commissions, the department has become synonymous with craftsmanship, innovation and attention to detail – helping thousands of modellers recreate everything from treasured childhood memories to historically accurate railway scenes.

Thousands of models later

Since production customisation began in 2001, TMC has continually expanded what is possible with a ready-to-run model.

What started with straightforward renumbering and weathering has evolved into an extensive range of specialist services, including:

Over the last 25 years, TMC has never remained still. As new techniques, materials and technologies become available, the customisation team has continually refined its methods, introducing increasingly realistic effects that have helped redefine expectations of professionally customised models.

Services now include intricate weathering effects, realistic coal loads, buffer grease, firebox ash, water streaking, tarpaulins, detailed cab interiors, digital sound fitting, renaming, renumbering and countless customer-requested modifications.

Among the department's most recognisable offerings is Deluxe Weathering, allowing customers to commission highly detailed, photograph-inspired replicas.

For those seeking professional realism at an accessible price, Value Weathering has opened the door for even more modellers to enjoy expertly weathered models.

Bringing the history of rail to life

For us, customisation has always been more than adding paint or replacing parts. Every commission represents someone's railway story. Some recreate locomotives remembered from childhood. Others become centrepieces on award-winning exhibition layouts. And, many commemorate special occasions or preserve important moments in railway history.

Our distinctive graffiti wagons have developed an enthusiastic following of their own. Individually hand-drawn rather than machine-printed, no two wagons are identical, making each one a unique collectable.

Perhaps more remarkably, almost 95% of our custom work is never seen on our website, travelling directly from our workshops to customers' layouts and display cabinets around the world.
