Authentic wagon loads: New TMC-customised 'OO' twin packs
It's what's on the wagon that counts! New TMC-customised twin packs
How many model railway layouts feature beautifully detailed goods wagons running completely empty? We've created two new customised OO gauge twin packs to put that right.
Authentic wagon loads are one of the simplest ways to improve the realism of a model railway, yet they're often overlooked. Real goods trains had a purpose, transporting everything from manufactured steel and industrial pipework to materials for railway maintenance and construction.
At TMC, we've taken two of our popular Bachmann plate and double bolster wagon exclusives, created twin packs and added realistic loads that reflect the work these vehicles were built to undertake.
One features convincing lengths of pipework, secured with chains, while the other carries a realistic load of steel plate. Both add an extra dimension to these already distinctive wagons.

Based on British Railways' 22-ton plate wagon design, these vehicles were built to carry steel products and other substantial loads. The featured model represents DB931321, a wagon constructed at Shildon in 1951. Originally used in revenue service, it subsequently entered departmental use, receiving the TOPS classification ZDO while retaining its BR freight grey appearance.

Bachmann 22T double bolster wagon twin pack

SKU: 38-830ZTWINTMC
Double bolster wagons were designed to accommodate long and awkward loads, playing an important role in transporting steel products, rails and engineering materials.
The featured TMC model represents DE250482, built by the LNER at Darlington in 1942. It later entered British Railways departmental service, where vehicles of this type were frequently used to transport rail and other materials for track maintenance.
Finished in its distinctive departmental grey and olive green appearance, our customised twin pack carries a carefully selected load to give the wagons the character of working railway vehicles. Why wagon loads matter
Freight traffic was an essential part of Britain's railway network. Steelworks, engineering companies, construction projects and railway maintenance depots all depended on wagons like these to move heavy and awkward materials.
A rake of loaded wagons immediately tells a more convincing story than an identical formation running empty.
The details matter, too. The positioning of the load, how it rests on the wagon and the way it is secured all contribute to its appearance. Our chained-down pipe load is a particularly effective example of how these small additions transform an otherwise empty wagon.
These customised twin packs are ideal for recreating departmental engineering trains, industrial freight workings or the varied goods traffic seen during the British Railways era.
Bring more realism to your goods trains
At TMC, we're constantly looking for ways to make model railway rolling stock more authentic. Our workshop customisation isn't limited to weathering and renumbering — realistic wagon loads are another way to bring working railway character to your collection.
If you've spent time making your locomotives, scenery and buildings look the part, why leave your goods wagons empty?
These two customised twin packs are available now, while stocks last.
