Their story is closely linked to the growth of large-scale quarrying and the increasing use of rail to move bulk materials. Stone is exceptionally heavy, making rail an obvious choice for transporting it over significant distances. The challenge was developing a wagon that could carry large loads while standing up to the demands of constant heavy-duty operation.
The PTA was designed with exactly that purpose in mind. Its large-capacity body and robust bogie chassis made it ideally suited to aggregate traffic, where trains could consist of long rakes of identical wagons loaded with crushed stone.
A typical working began at the quarry, where the wagons would be loaded.
