A Royal Lineage of Power and Performance

The ‘Princess Coronation’ class, often referred to as ‘Duchesses’, represented the pinnacle of LMS express passenger steam locomotives. A total of 38 locomotives were built between 1937 and 1948, with many receiving streamlined casings early in their service life. However, 6233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’, delivered in July 1938, was built in conventional form without streamlining.

Fitted with a double chimney in 1941 and smoke deflectors in 1946, the locomotive transitioned into BR service as 46233 before being withdrawn in February 1964. Thankfully, this iconic engine was preserved and today resides at the Midland Railway – Butterley, continuing to delight crowds as a regular mainline operator.
