These wagons were introduced into BR service in 1989 and utilised redundant MGR hopper wagon chassis, with new, low-sided steel bodies. ‘Clam’ wagons were used in engineering and permanent way trains for carrying ballast, spoil and sleepers. They had fixed sides and ends and were fitted with vacuum brakes. A total of 400 were built and they were given the TOPS code ‘ZCV’.
