Details
The British Rail Class 37 is a diesel-electric locomotive built by English Electric between 1960 and 1965. A total of 309 were constructed at the Vulcan Foundry and Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns works. Powered by a 1,750 horsepower English Electric 12CSVT engine, the locomotives were designed for mixed traffic duties and proved highly versatile, working passenger and freight services across the network. Their distinctive engine sound earned them the nickname “Tractors”. Many were later refurbished with electric train heating for passenger use. Despite widespread withdrawals from the 1990s, more than 60 locomotives remain in preservation or limited mainline service.
