Details
Class 56 031 'Merehead' BR Dutch Grey/Yellow
The British Rail Class 56 is a heavy freight diesel-electric locomotive introduced between 1976 and 1984. A total of 135 locomotives were built, with early units constructed by Electroputere in Romania and later examples assembled by BREL in Doncaster and Crewe. Powered by a Ruston-Paxman RK3 engine producing 3,250 hp, the Class 56 was designed for hauling heavy goods across the UK rail network. Known for their strength and rugged design, they became a mainstay of British Rail’s freight operations. Several Class 56s remain active in mainline use and preservation today, a testament to their enduring legacy.
