Our next Limited Edition a Southern Region 4 wheeled cycle van. In 1951 14 standard Passenger Luggage Van’s were converted primarily for the conveyance of cycles between London and the Channel Ports. They were used on trains to Dover Folkstone and Newhaven. They were fitted internally with between 24 and 60 hooks to carry bicycles and could be readily distinguished from standard vans by a white stencilled bicycle symbol.
Apart from use on the Channel Docks trains they were also used to convey new bicycles from Kent to London. They had one other use which took them away from the Southern Region as the Cyclist Tourist Club used to run special trains from the London area to other parts of the country.A typical train would consist of three or four coaches and cycle vans. British Transport Films made a programme about these excursions in the mid 1950’s.
The cycle vans remained in service until the late 1960’s following which they were used on parcels work alongside the standard vans. The TMC example will be S1282S finished in pristine crimson livery or weathered by TMC.
